Thanksgiving Origami - Cross Legged Turkeys

If you're looking for a free art project for the days before Thanksgiving break, try cross-legged origami turkeys. All you need is paper!

These little guys are a perfect "go to" activity for the week before Thanksgiving. After students have spent a whole lotta time perfecting their feathery friends, they can take him or her home to sit happily on the Thanksgiving table. Cross-legged turkeys make the best napkin holders. :)

If you want to try this activity with your little ones all you need is paper, scissors, and some clear instructions.

Model step by step, and show students a completed turkey before giving them paper! This will save you lots of issues later. Although, no matter how carefully you model, there's a 90% chance one of your kiddos will cut their turkey in half once it's time for scissors. That's when the little guy you made as an example will come in extra handy. Just chuck the massacred turkey and offer yours as a replacement. It's way easier than getting out tape or the stapler.

If you'd rather get fancy and do some differentiating (good for you Super Teacher!), you can have two groups: one that can be more independent following the written directions (15 or so copies of the directions linked above should do the trick), and one group with you that will work on following step by step oral directions.

As a fast finisher, students can use the extra paper they get from cutting their original rectangular paper into a square to make baby turkeys. It's endless turkey fun!
